The smartphone market recorded a record drop in supplies
Global smartphone shipments fell year-on-2020 in the first quarter of 11.7%, according to the press service of the research company International Data Corporation (IDC). According to IDC experts, 275.8 million devices were delivered worldwide in the first quarter of 2020, which is 11.7% less than in the same period of the previous year. It is noted that this fall became a record year-on-year in the history of the smartphone market. The sharp decline in supplies is due to the consequences of the outbreak of a new coronavirus infection, which by the end of the quarter had reached the whole world. In April, China's production chains began to recover, but consumer demand is growing very poorly. Consumers are becoming increasingly cautious about their spending in such uncertain times. Therefore, it is unlikely to be expected that smartphone purchases will not be affected by falling demand combined with blockages and retail closures around the world, the IDC report notes. The largest smartphone supplier in the first quarter of 2020 was the South Korean company Samsung, which shipped 58.3 million devices. The second largest supply was taken by Chinese company Huawei (49 million smartphones), the third American Apple (36.7 million). Five of the company's largest suppliers from China Xiaomi (29.5 million) and Vivo (24.8 million) were closed. As previously reported by the news agency, on April 30 experts of the research company TrendForce said that in the second quarter of 2020 the volume of smartphone production is expected to fall by 16.5% year-on-year.
