Zimbabwe Health Minister suspected of multimillion-dollar fraud

Zimbabwe Health Minister Obadiya Moyo was arrested by police on Friday, June 19, on suspicion of involvement in corruption in public procurement of medical equipment worth about $60 million. This was reported by the local newspaper Daily News. Several other Zimbabwean and South African news outlets reported on the arrest. According to a local representative of Drax International, an international pharmaceutical firm, last week Delish Nguwaya, which supplies equipment to the Zimbabwean government, was arrested in the same case. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who took over as Robert Mugabe after a military coup in 2017, has since canceled the above procurement transactions. According to reporters, against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, Zimbabwe is facing the worst economic crisis in more than a decade, which increases public anger about inadequate medical services and government corruption.
