Australian Prime Minister to visit Japan in November
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison plans to travel to Japan in November to meet with the country's newly elected Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, The Australian newspaper reported on September 22. The visit will be aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries in the face of growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. The planned visit may be postponed until January 2021, if the coronavirus situation worsens or if Suga dissolves the House of Representatives in the general election before the proposed visit. The leaders are expected, among other things, to discuss an agreement on the legal status of members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Australian Defense Forces during joint exercises. Scott Morrison and Sugi's predecessor Shinzo Abe agreed to hold a summit in Tokyo in the near future during online talks on July 9. Note that the Australian Prime Minister has already spoken on the phone with Yoshihide Suga after his inauguration on September 16.
